Google's terrifying humanoid robot runs through forest

A terrifying humanoid robot was built by Boston Dynamic.
They built a one of a kind humanoid robot that can walk through the forest and surpass obstacles.

They say "this robot may not like us, who can do everything, but if they will get pushing, they maybe have it in the future".

Watch the entire video of how amazing this robot, and of what capabilty it can do.

However, it's the humanoid robots that begin to make one fear that the prawns from the movie "District 9" were mere pets compared with what our scientists might think up.

Balance and dynamics are the two main thrusts of humanoid robot development. But when Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert shows the six-foot-tall Atlas humanoid robot marauding through the woods, you wonder about the juxtaposition between future and nature.

This robot looks like one of those people/things that want to stab characters in movies. If he/she/it suddenly produced a chainsaw, I wouldn't be surprised.

When it breaks into a trot, you get the sense that it has spotted someone it needs to assault and will continue to advance until its preprogrammed task is complete. A tree would be safer from it than a human.

It's not hard to conceive that we might be looking at the future boots on the ground, as the saying goes. This would make for a fearsome soldier.

Raibert admits Atlas isn't quite human yet. However, he said: "You can imagine if we keep pushing, we'll get there."
I think I can imagine, yes. I imagine that this Atlas isn't so fond of shrugging as he is of relentlessly pursuing.

Elon Musk's third electric car, three years of delay, with over 20,000 pre-orders

Elon Musk’s third electric car will be delivered to customers in the US after three years of delay, with over 20,000 pre-orders

Tesla’s much delayed electric sports utility vehicle is due to finally reach customers, starting in September, Elon Musk has announced.

The Model X was originally unveiled in 2012 alongside the first deliveries of the Model S sedan and was expected to go into production in 2013. Musk announced two subsequent delays as the company struggled to meet demand for the Model S and the motoring company’s expansion plans.

The Model X has a higher ride height, all-wheel drive and can seat up to seven, making it the largest vehicle available from Tesla Motors. More than 20,000 people have already paid a $5,000 deposit to reserve one of the new models. Pricing is expected to be similar to the Model S, which starts at £50,000 in the UK.

Musk confirmed that the company’s Model X car configurator would be available online in the next three weeks and that customers will start receiving new cars by 30 September.

The Roadster, Tesla’s first car, the Model S, and now the Model X, are being used to pave the way for Tesla’s Model 3, which is Musk’s vision of a mass market

“The goal at Tesla is to produce a mass-market electric car, but we can only get there one step at a time by selling the Roadster and now the Model S to fund the mass market,” said Musk at the UK launch of the Model S.

The Model 3’s design is expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of next year and delivered to customers by the end of 2017, priced at around £30,000.

Tesla also said it expects to ship a further 12,000 vehicles in the third quarter of this year, 2,000 up on the first quarter, matching the second quarter and up 60% year-on-year.

Apple to give first official indication of Watch sales in quarterly earnings report

Apple to give first official indication of Watch sales in quarterly earnings report

The company has kept quiet about sales figures for the Apple Watch, which went on sale in April, but analysts’ estimates are low after tepid reviews

All eyes will be on Apple’s Watch sales when the tech behemoth reports its latest quarterly earnings later today. There may not be much to see.

Analysts have called for caution ahead of Apple’s earnings call today, during which the company is expected to give its first official indication of Apple Watch sales figures since they went on sale in April. However, Apple will probably leave the exact revenue for the product in the “other” category and few are expecting detailed figures for an Apple product that has got off to a mixed start.

“Even if Apple comes out on the low end, everybody else wants to have those numbers,” said Ramon Llamas, who analyzes the phones and wearables market for market research firm IDC. “Everyone want to have those numbers even if they’re low, because everyone wants to crack that 1m unit barrier.”

Apple is believed to have topped that number in its first day of pre-sales, but tepid reviews and the inevitability of a newer version with fewer bugs have kept analysts’ estimates low – most estimate numbers for the quarter between three and five million. The company itself has been quiet about sales figures.

S&P Capital’s Angelo Zino, in a note to investors, said he believed the company should have greater transparency given the attention of shareholders on the product.

“While [Apple’s] launch into the wearables space began with a bang, we believe orders for the Apple Watch have considerably cooled down since the initial release,” he wrote. “We believe management should release actual figures for the Apple Watch given that it has completed its first full quarter, as it has been an overhang on the shares in recent weeks.” Zino added that he didn’t believe that would happen, but that expansion of watch sales into a wider geographic area would boost sales.

Llamas remains bullish. “Never, ever, ever underestimate Apple,” he said. “I think the big question is where does Apple go from here?” Llamas added that the next questions were logistical: will Apple announce third-party retailer partners, and if so, will its availability at, say, Best Buy affect the marketing strategy that has focused so much attention on selling the watch as something for an executive?

It’s also an open question how Apple will continue to develop the app store for the product – initial impressions of the store were mixed to negative, with users complaining about a surfeit of fitness apps and too few options that made efficient use of the small screen.

And of course, when will users get an Apple Watch 2? That date, said Llamas, has to be far enough in the future that early adopters don’t feel slighted.

“I don’t think it’ll be in 2015,” he said. “That would piss off a lot of customers.”

Especially customers who bought the deluxe version.
